The vast majority of onions in Poland have yet to be harvested, but it continues to rain. Many potatoes are still in the ground. The prices are reasonable.
Rain, rain and more rain. In Poland, precipitation causes problems for farmers. Niels van der Boom, market expert at Boerenbusiness, is Thursday, October 5 in the Warsaw region. "This summer the region had a lot of water. As a result, there are many fine onions. I estimate that 80% to 85% still need to be harvested."
Because there are still so many onions in the fields, the current price is reasonable. "The market price in Warsaw, which determines the price for the whole of Poland, is €0,17 per kilo, sorted into 15 kilo bags." According to Van der Boom, the situation is different in the south of Poland. "It was very dry here. The kilos are good here and the onions are larger. The harvest is therefore largely ready."
There is also a lot of rain near the Czech Republic and in the east of the country. "Almost all the onions still have to come off the field. It is now October 5 and that is quite late! I was with someone this week who still had to clear 130 hectares."
