On the first plots of the Boerenbusiness The onions came through during the crop tour. The fields in Wezup, Ysselsteyn and Kortgene were sown 3 to 4 weeks ago and the onions came through last week.
In wezup (Drenthe) the onions were sown around 1 April. Due to the dry conditions, it was decided to sow 4,2 units per hectare, which is more units than usual. The grower hopes that this will allow enough seed to germinate and thus guarantee a good yield despite the drought.
"I don't notice much difference with other years in terms of emergence, which can probably be explained by the fact that I sown more. Only the higher parts remain behind due to less accessibility to moisture, otherwise the onions are beautifully flagged," says the grower from Drenthe. know. Now that the onions are flagged, it is important to watch out for contact herbicides, onions have a low tolerance for this.
First pipe above
The plot in Limburg Ysselsteyn is the first Crop Tour field to be sown and through which the onions also came through first. The photo shows that a pipe has come on the onion. If the first pipes are large enough, the tolerance to contact herbicide will increase. The grower notices little difference with other years by sowing early.
No possibility to irrigate
The grower in Kortgene (Zeeland) has no possibility to irrigate. This is clearly visible on the plot. After the treatments, the clods become smaller and smaller and there are many small clods on the plot and here and there a coarser clod. There are differences in the weight of the soil in the plot. In the lighter parts the onions are already clearly visible, the heavier parts are lagging behind a bit, but after the precipitation of Saturday April 18, the onions started to germinate more than before.
