The onion growers of the Boerenbusiness Crop tours have been busy with the last contact herbicide spraying, irrigating and the last plot has been sown.
On the plot in heijen has been irrigated to allow the last onions to germinate and to make the top layer a bit softer/finer. The sprinkling was done at a windless moment. This resulted in approximately equal amounts of water on the plot. Irrigation means that seeds that have not yet germinated have access to moisture to germinate. The top layer also becomes softer/finer, making it easier for the onion to come out of the ground.
wezup
In wezup was the last spray of contact herbicide before most onions went flag. Onions that flag (see photo) have a lower tolerance to contact herbicide.
Kimswerd
On April 28, 2020, the grower sprayed a Kimswerd with a soil herbicide during a shower of approximately 2 mm. The onions are still in the staple stage and should start flagging soon.
Dronten
The latest plot of the crop tour has been sown this year. Aeres University of Applied Sciences has waited to sow to treat the dry conditions with irrigation. Due to the strong wind, the plot has not been irrigated evenly and the plot has dried up quickly, so many clods remain.
