Crop tour Week 19

First herbicide spraying on potato fields

7 May 2020 - Redactie Boerenbusiness

Of the 10 potato plots participating in the Boerenbusiness Crop tour, the growers have been busy planting the Innovators. Most participants are now ready and are doing the first herbicide sprays to tackle the weeds. The backs are also milled.

In North Brabant Someren has started with the first round of spraying. The herbicide spray is intended against weeds, so that it cannot hinder the development of the potato. A Hardi boom has been installed on this self-propelled Amazone sprayer to achieve 99% drift reduction.

The plot is located in the same province fine art, a soil herbicide has been applied here. The aim is for the weeds to absorb the soil herbicide to the root and die.

Preserving Nutrients
In Frisian Appelscha the grower has also started spraying against weeds. By combating weeds, the grower wants to prevent the weeds from absorbing nutrients that the potato also wants to use.

Milling ridges
In Middenmeer the grower has been busy milling the potato ridges. With this, the grower ensures that the potato has more room to grow and prevents potatoes from lying 'bare' in the sun and turning green.
