Dutch Crop tour Week 37

Loading onions on the plot in Heijen

10 September 2020 - Kimberly Bakker

The onion plot in Heijen (Limburg) that participates in the Boerenbusiness Crop tour was harvested last week and the onions are now being shipped. "Although I don't have a definitive yield yet, I suspect we will get around 50 tons. The quality is good, although our onions are less coarse this year than we are used to from other years."

The last trial harvest for this plot showed a yield of 48,1 tons, compared to 67,4 tons last season. The fact that the yield is lower came as no surprise to the grower. "As a result of the precipitation in February, the soil has become hard. This made it difficult for the onions to get deeper than 10 centimeters in the ground and I saw that they had given up early," the grower said. earlier know this season.
