Delayed development in the Wieringermeer

31 May 2018 - Anne Jan Doorn

The potatoes of the Innovator variety in the Wieringermeer (North Holland) were planted on time (on King's Day). Shortly afterwards, 40 millimeters of rain fell and the development of the potatoes has slowed down considerably due to that abundant rain.

The Innovators on this lot didn't surface until the end of May. This is comparable to the potato fields in the area that were sown 2 weeks later and that have not had any heavy rainfall.

The plot has an area of more than 9 hectares. Before the potatoes were there, there were tulips on the plot. The soil type of the plot is clay (34% silt) and has an organic matter content of 3,2% and a pH of 7,4. As a green manure, there was a mixture betamaxx in the autumn.

operations
The plot has not been turned over. Flailing and disc harrowing was done in November. At the end of April, the Innovators were planted at a distance of 26 centimeters. This was done with a cup planter (cp24 Miedema). The planting bed was also prepared in one pass, using a Baselier front cultivator. After Pentecost, backs are milled. A basic fertilization with 700 kilos of CAN per hectare was applied in mid-May.
