Little hindrance from precipitation on loess soil in Limburg

June 1, 2018 - Anne Jan Doorn

In Bocholtz, the extreme tip of South Limburg, there is a plot with loess soil. The potato plants on this plot are already almost 25 centimeters tall and are developing very well. Despite a lot of rainfall, the plot experienced little disturbance.

In South Limburg it is mandatory to plow a threshold. It works well and so far the water has not been washed away completely, despite heavy rain. The dams ensure that the rainwater does not flow. The plot is over 4 hectares in size and had beets as a pre-fruit. The plot is located next to a forest.

Activities
The loess soil is 25% siltable and has an organic matter content of 3,5%. The plot was plowed in December and pulled up with the harrow at the beginning of April. On April 10, the Innovators went into the ground, 36 centimeters apart. The basic fertilization is 200 kilos of CAN per hectare. 23 cubic meters of slurry was also applied.
