Special Crop tour week 23

Innovator shows significant difference in growth

June 8, 2018 - Anne Jan Doorn

There will be an update every week about the Boerenbusiness Crop tour. It highlights recent developments on the various potato plots. In week 23 it is noticeable that the growth of the potatoes is very different.

In general, the potatoes are growing strongly at the moment. The crop on the plot in the Noordoostpolder (NOP) is already closed. The plants are already flowering and the tubers are forming. This certainly does not apply to all plots. On the plot in Zeeland the potatoes only surfaced last weekend.

Precipitation
However, in some fields too much rain causes growth to almost come to a standstill. On the Crop tour plot in spike the crop barely grew because there was little sun and wind. The ground is still too wet. The plots in the north of the country have therefore received the necessary precipitation in recent days, between 35 and 40 millimeters.

On the plot in Fijnaart the crops grow extremely fast. Despite planting later, the growth makes up for it. That does mean that a lot of foliage is made. That can be a risk in the event that a dry period comes.

Crop protection
late blightspraying are necessary in some places because of the high disease pressure. Weed control is going well on most plots, due to the spread of rainfall.
