Special Crop tour week 27

In Spijk, irrigation is now a necessity

4 July 2018 - Anne Jan Doorn

The drought is noticeable across the country. In Groningen, however, relatively much rain fell. The plot in Spijk received 39,9 millimeters and 49,8 millimeters of precipitation fell on the plot in the Johannes Kerkhovenpolder.

The differences, regarding the drought on the various parcels participating in the Boerenbusiness Crop tour, are big. In Zeeland, 9,3 millimeters of precipitation fell, but Fijnaart took the cake with only 3,6 millimeters. The plot in Spijk was irrigated for the first time this week.

To make optimal use of the 15 to 20 millimeters of precipitation, there is a day in advance nitrogen (NK 16-30) given. On the plot in Spijk, an average of 12 tubers per plant were counted. The potatoes on this plot are in heavy clay (about 47% silt), which means there is a lot of capillary action.

Drought in May
In the month of May there was also a drought in Spijk. Where there was too much rain on other plots, it was very dry on this plot. After a period of 3 weeks without rain, a shower of 15 millimeters was very welcome at the end of May.
