Special Crop tour week 27

Impact of precipitation shortage is noticeable

6 July 2018 - Frank Vermeulen

The consequences of the dry month are also visible on the plots participating in the Boerenbusiness Crop tour. The plots where it is possible to irrigate, are (depending on the circumstances) fresh. However, on the plots where it is not possible to irrigate, people crave water.

The impact of the drought is noticeable on the plot in Scharendijke† This is where the crop starts to flower, due to drought stress. The plant also drops the lower leaves. However, the crop has not yet grown and parts of the plot are not yet closed. The disadvantage of this is that the sun shines directly on the ridges. On the other hand, the plant has less foliage mass, so that the plant evaporates less moisture.

On the plot in Escharen drought is beginning to take hold. The water level in the sources is falling, and the local water boards indicate that there is sufficient water from the Meuse. There will therefore also be no irrigation ban here. The crop is now in good shape.

In South Limburg, on the plot in Bocholtzare less affected by the drought. Here even another layer of leaves has grown and the tubers have also become thicker again. The plot is very vital† The crop is deeply rooted and there is sufficient moisture in the bottom layer

Irrigate
On the plot in Fijnaart was rained for the first time this week (week 27). In June 3,6 millimeters of precipitation fell here. At a time 25 millimeters is irrigated, with water from the Hollands Diep. There will also be no irrigation ban in this area, but there will be less pressure on the inland flow. This is due to the low water level.

Into the crop on the plot Hank looks fresh (under the circumstances). The plot looks vital and there is a nice foliage package on the back. This week it rained for the fourth time, about 25 millimeters. The plot is located near various branches of the Hollands Diep and there is no irrigation ban.An overview of the plots participating in the Boerenbusiness Crop tour in week 27.
