Plot in Zeeland vulnerable due to drought

10 July 2018 - Frank Vermeulen - 1 reaction

The drought on the Scharendijke plot (Zeeland) continues. Not a drop has fallen on the 4,6 hectare plot since June 15, although there were a few dewy nights. Less than 1 millimeters of precipitation has fallen on the plot since 10 June.

The program plot in Scharendijk has had no rain to date, with 9,6 millimeters falling last month. The plants are now starting to get fragile and will likely drop the lower leaves. The drought also means that the plant absorbs nitrogen less effectively. Therefore, on this plot foliar feeding and urea injected.

Being on the plot also differ in the heaviness and workability of the soil. At the back of the plot, the crop is not yet dense and the soil is also slightly heavier here. The pre-fruit is grass seed. About 1 week before planting, 240 kilos of nitrogen per hectare were given.

Plot characteristics
The plot was plowed at the end of August and the plot was planted in mid-May. The size of the seed potatoes is 45/50 and planting was done at a distance of 33 centimeters. The subsoil is light clay and that is 36% siltable. Despite the capillary action of the clay soil, it is very dry in the back. More moisture evaporates than can be supplied from the soil.
