News Crop tour week 28

High temperatures on potato fields

13 July 2018 - Frank Vermeulen

The month of June was very dry and warm. This is also reflected in the data collected from the potato plots participating in the Boerenbusiness Crop tour. In the province of North Brabant in particular, it was very warm in June.

In the provinces of North Brabant and Limburg, it has been below 20 degrees Celsius for the least number of days. In addition, the mercury in North Brabant most often rose above 25 degrees Celsius. On the plots in Fijnaart and Escharen, a temperature of above 8 degrees Celsius was measured for 25 days in June.

On the potato plots in Hank and Marknesse lag the temperature most often between 20 and 25 degrees Celsius. The plots in Middenmeer and Spijk have the lowest scores in terms of temperature. These are the only 2 plots where the temperature has been between 10 and 20 degrees Celsius for less than 25 days.

Lowest temperatures
The lowest temperature in June is due to the plot in Middenmeer. The mercury did not rise above 19 degrees Celsius in 30 of the 20 days. On the plot in Hank, 'only' 1 degrees Celsius was measured for 14,7 day, the lowest temperature of all the plots participating in the Crop Tour.

The month of July also started warm. In the first week, the plots in Escharen en Bocholtz a maximum temperature of more than 25 degrees Celsius measured every day. A temperature of 6 degrees Celsius was also measured on the potato plots in Hank and Fijnaart for 25 days.

The potato plots in Spijk, Middenmeer and Marknesse had to deal with the heat to a lesser extent. The maximum temperature here did not exceed 25 degrees Celsius. On the plot in Spijk, the temperature did not rise above 4 degrees Celsius for 20 days. So there is a big difference between the north and the south of the country.
