Crop tour Review 2018

Crop tour 2018 was all about drought

1 March 2019 - Steven de Rijk

The Crop Tour of Boerenbusiness started on Friday 1 March for the second time. Last growing season, 10 plots of the potato variety Innovator were followed, and the growing season was recorded as very special due to the extreme drought. A short summary of the Crop Tour 2018.

De last trial harvest  Boerenbusiness Crop tour for 2018 was carried out in week 36 (September). Based on this trial grubbing-up, it can be concluded that the average yield is 51,2 tons per hectare. The difference between the highest and lowest yields in this growing season was almost 35 tons.

Difference in yield
The trial harvesting figures clearly showed that the yields were considerably lower than in previous years; especially if it is taken into account that the Crop Tour plots were generally located on the heavier soils, where the water supply is often better.

The hectare yields were highest on the plot in Marknesse (Noordoostpolder), where the yield in the 2018 growing season was 65 tons per hectare. The lowest yield result was for the plot in Scharendijke† The yield on this plot in 2018 amounted to a meager 30 tons per hectare.

To irrigate or not?
During the Crop Tour of 2018, 2 plots in Groningen were followed. The yields on these 2 plots clearly show the difference between irrigating or not. On the plot in spike has been irrigated 6 times, while the plot in the Johannes Kerkhovenpolder has only been irrigated once. This is reflected in the revenues; approximately 1 tons were harvested in Spijk, while in the Johannes Kerkhovenpolder this was 60 tons.

The amount of precipitation and the number of times that could be irrigated have caused large differences in yield. For example, the plot in Scharendijke, where the lowest results were achieved, also had the least rainfall last year. Less than 1 millimeters of water fell here between 70 June and mid-September. Irrigation was also not possible on this plot.

However, there is not always a clear correlation between the amount of water and the yields. The plot with the highest yields (the plot in Marknesse) did not have the most water/precipitation last growing season.

Crop tour 2019
All in all, the . outlined Boerenbusiness Crop tour in 2018 a good picture of the differences within the Netherlands, whereby irrigation and soil type have certainly been taken into account. On Friday March 1, the Crop Tour for 2019 has started. This year, in addition to 10 parcels of Innovator, another 7 parcels with onions will be followed.
