North of the Netherlands
In the north of Friesland, in Kimswerd, we find the first plot, which is located on loamy soil. This parcel is 3 hectares and here onions of the Centro variety are sown. The pre-fruit on the plot is ware potatoes. 4 units per hectare are sown and it is also described as a late field.
The second plot is located in Drenthe, where onion cultivation has gained considerable popularity in recent years. The plot is located in Zweelo and is located on sandy soil. This plot is 6 hectares and the Vento variety is sown. 4,1 units per hectare are sown, with potatoes as the preliminary crop. This is usually a mid-early plot.
Several plots in Flevoland
De Gewastour has 3 onion plots in Flevoland. The first plot is the plot of Aeres Farms† This plot is 7,5 hectares and is maintained by the students of the Aeres University of Applied Sciences. The Hyway variety is sown on this plot, which is located on clay soil. This is a mid-early plot, with ware potatoes as pre-fruit.
The second onion plot of the Boerenbusiness Crop Tour is located in Zeewolde† This plot is located on sea clay soil and Hyfive is sown here. The onion plot is 4,7 hectares in size and had winter wheat as pre-fruit. Normally this is a mid-early plot.
The third, and also last, plot in the province of Flevoland is located in Marknesse. This plot is 3,5 hectares in size and had sugar beets as a precursor. On this plot, onions of the Dormo variety are sown.
South of the country
The province of Zeeland has been the heart of onion cultivation for many years. That is why 1 onion plot is also monitored here. We find the first plot in the place Kortgene, where a plot of 5 hectares is followed. On this plot, onions of the Dormo variety are followed. 3,8 units per hectare are sown and the plot is on light loamy soil. It is a late field, with winter wheat as pre-fruit.
The last plot to participate in the Boerenbusiness Crop Tour, located in East Brabant. The plot is located in oeffelt, is 5 hectares in size and the soil type is a combination of light clay and loam. The Vento variety is sown on this plot, with 1-year grassland as pre-fruit. The plot is described as an early plot.
