The plots of the Boerenbusiness Crop tours have now been sown. The first onion plots germinated last week. However, due to the drought and cold last week, the germination process on the other plots is somewhat delayed.
The onions were sown on the onion plots in Zeewolde (Flevoland) and Kimswerd (Friesland) on Tuesday, April 9. In both plots they were sown on 1,5 meter beds, with 5 rows. The onions were sown on the plot in Zweeloo (Drenthe) on Wednesday, April 10.
Before sowing on the plot in Zweeloo, liquid fertilizer was first applied, which was then incorporated with a cultivator. The onions here are sown on beds of 1,8 meters, with 7 rows.
Irrigate
The seedbed is dry on the vast majority of the Crop Tour plots. In Zeewolde, the plot was even irrigated last weekend to increase the moisture content in the seedbed. The conditions for germination are favorable. The moisture content in the bed is higher, especially due to the application of liquid fertilizer.
Irrigation is also being considered on the onion plot in Tollebeek (Flevoland), mainly because there is currently a chance that the seed will dry out.
Humidity
The drying wind of the past few days also has an influence on the moisture content in the bed. The humidity on the plots has dropped from 90% to 65% since the first week of April. Since the weekend, these percentages have been increasing again towards 75%.
You can also monitor the humidity on the plots live using the weather data page of the Crop Tour.
