We won't soon forget Easter 2019. It was sunny and warm in the Netherlands, with just shy of a heat record. These warm days make it very dry for this time of year. What everyone is now wondering is whether we will have another year as dry as 2018?
Rain has been falling since Wednesday, May 1, which is desperately needed for the newly sown onion plots. Various plots have been rained in recent days, mainly to prevent crust formation, to promote uniform emergence or because the seed was dry. Unfortunately, irrigation is not possible everywhere.
Test fields
Hazera's test fields are spread throughout the country, in order to gain extensive experience with our varieties. The sowing period went smoothly. We now see, with the warm weather of the past few days, that the onions are growing quickly, but this also applies to the weeds.
The test plots receive the normal practical treatments of growers in terms of fertilization and care. The time for observation has now arrived. Hazera's crop specialists will closely monitor the plots (after emergence). First we count the number of seed onion plants that have emerged. We also look at the condition of the crop and any differences between the varieties.
