Dutch Crop tour Onions week 22

Slow arrival of the second pipe

27 May 2019 - Redactie Boerenbusiness

On almost all plots of the Gewastour van Boerenbusiness the onions are in the second pipe. Where growth was not yet there, it is now starting to come. This has to do with the warm days of last week and the rain on Sunday 26 May.

Although it is not yet too late for the second pipe, growers still feel that it is a bit late. After all, it is only less than 4 weeks until the longest day arrives. After this longest day, the onions will stop forming tubes and the onion will form a tuber.

Best results
On the onion plot in Zweeloo (Drenthe) the onions are doing well at the moment. Also the monitoring to the turnout shows the best results in this field. For the time being, this plot is not being irrigated yet, but we are looking forward to the expected rain. "It's just a matter of waiting for the cat out of the tree," says the grower from Zweeloo.

On the plot in Dronten (Flevoland) the onions are now also starting to grow. Due to the rain on Sunday 19 May, a number of plants were flattened, but they have recovered.

Clearer rows
On the Gewastour plot in Tollebeek (Flevoland), the rows in particular are becoming increasingly visible. About 26 millimeters fell here on Sunday 10 May, which was mainly due to the effect of the soil herbicides at the desired time.
