Adults and larvae of thrips observed in seed onions
Thrips are currently being found in the seed onions on various plots. In addition to adults, the first larvae are also found in the heart of the plant. Most seed onions currently have 3 to 5 tubes, depending on the time of sowing.
Several plots are somewhat irregular, which is mainly caused by the precipitation that fell after sowing. This has also caused crusting. The growth is good on most plots, which is especially important with the good effectiveness of Movento and Batavia (anti-thrips remedies). Both products contain the active ingredient 'spirotetramat'.
Good absorption of the active substance in the leaf is essential for good effectiveness. Spirotetramant is transported both upwards and downwards to the growing plant parts. This means that the young larvae that are hiding in the shaft of the onions can be easily reached.
Local (thunderstorms) showers have created large national differences in precipitation amounts. Some fields with second-year onion sets are already showing yellow leaf tips because of the drought. If there is the possibility to irrigate, then definitely take this into consideration. This is to keep the crop growing well.
Movento and Batavia
If adults (and possibly the first larvae) are present, now is the time to spray with the product Batavia SC with oil or Movento OD. From tests we see that the combination of Batavia SC and oil means that more active substance is absorbed into the plant than with Movento OD. This is especially true under critical circumstances where the absorption of agents is hampered by a thick wax layer. More active ingredient in the plant also means better effectiveness.
The oil used in these trials is Robbester (an esterified rapeseed oil). Movento and Batavia are safe for beneficial insects and spare the natural enemies of thrips. If applications with herbicides are still planned, apply them first (for thrips control). The oil has an effect on the wax layer of the onion, which can make the herbicides react more sharply.

In the presence of many adults, it is also possible to consider spraying with Flipper. Use sufficient water (more than 600 liters per hectare), apply with a coarse drop and check the outlet water for hardness (maximum 16,8°dH).
