Crop tour Onions week 27

Extreme heat not negative for onion plots

1 July 2019 - Redactie Boerenbusiness

The temperature rose to above 30 degrees Celsius last week. However, on most onion plots of the Gewastour, the temperature dropped again after Tuesday 25 June. What influence has this heat had on the plots of the Crop Tour of Boerenbusiness?

Irrigation took place last week on 4 of the 7 plots of the Gewastour Uien, including the plot in Oeffelt (North Brabant). Rained here for the second time after the emergence. Irrigation was also carried out on the plot in Dronten (Flevoland). However, since Sencrop's weather post is located here at the edge of the plot, the amount of water is not included.

It is not possible to irrigate on the onion plot in Kortgene (Zeeland). It is therefore slowly becoming drier on the plot. "We could use a little rain at the end of the week, but we don't really expect that," says the grower.

Still growing
Despite the extreme heat of last week, the Gewatour plots are in good shape. On most onion plots the onions now show 5 pipes or more. On the onion plot in Kimswerd (Friesland) the plants have 4 to 5 pipes and on the plot in Tollebeek (Flevoland) 3 to 5.

The seventh pipe is already emerging on the plot in Zweeloo (Drenthe). This is also the case on the plot in Kortgene (Zeeland), but here plants with 3 to 4 pipes are also visible due to the variegation. Compared to last week, this means that 1 pipe was added to each plot last week

Sphere Formation
On the onion plot in Zweeloo (Drenthe), the bulb formation is becoming clearer, although there is a spot on the side of the plot where the plants are slightly less. Bulb formation is also getting underway on the plots in Oeffelt (North Brabant) and Dronten (Flevoland). The first bulb formation is expected this weekend on the onion plot in Tollebeek (Flevoland) and Kortgene (Zeeland).

Disease pressure
There are few thrips on the Crop Tour plots. At the plot in Zeewolde (Flevoland), the number of thrips is monitored by means of an Agrifrim sticky trap. 3 thrips were found here last week. The thrips spraying is expected to be done at the end of the week on the plot in Kortgene (Zeeland).
