Dutch Crop tour Onions week 28

Bulb stage reached on onion fields

8 July 2019 - Redactie Boerenbusiness

It has been quiet this week on the onion plots of the Gewastour. The crops continue to grow gradually and pipes are added every week. The start of the spherical formation can also be observed on a number of plots this week. Where possible, the plots are irrigated.

The plot in Oeffelt (North Brabant) has already been irrigated 3 times in the past 3 weeks. In addition, the last nitrogen fertilization was done last week. Bulb formation is well underway. Compared to other plots, this plot appears to be the most developed.

First thrips spraying in Kimswerd
The Crop Tour plot in Kimswerd (Friesland) was irrigated once before emergence and twice after emergence. If it remains dry in the coming days, then the third time will be rained. Last week another pipe was created, which means that 1 to 2 pipes are currently being counted on this plot.

The largest plants are already starting to form bulbs and the rest are expected to follow in the coming week. A few thrips have been observed in this plot (and in the plots in the vicinity). That is why the first thrips spraying will be done next week.

The onions on the plot in Kimswerd (Friesland) have 5 to 6 pipes.

Backlog due to hail damage
The plot in Zeewolde (Flevoland) was also irrigated once before emergence and twice after emergence. There seems to be less moisture at the bottom of the plot. Also on this plot it remains to be seen whether there is still need to irrigate this week. "The plants are 1 to 2 weeks behind due to the hailstorm", the grower notes. This also has an advantage. The plants had less leaf surface and survived the warm days relatively well.

The onions on the plot in Zeewolde (Flevoland) are developing well.

'More foliage than last year'
The onions on the plot in Tollebeek (Flevoland) have so far only been irrigated once: before emergence. If this plot does not receive any rain in the coming days, irrigation will take place on Friday 1 July. The onions on the plot show 12 to 5 pipes. Bulb formation is underway on the plot. "Compared to last year, there is slightly more foliage on the crop," the grower says.
