Crop tour Potatoes week 28

Rain falls, but reels keep spinning

9 July 2019 - Redactie Boerenbusiness - 2 comments

On the crop tour plots 'it is and remains dry', according to 1 of the crop tour growers. Last weekend's rain has no influence either, the irrigation reels continue to run on most plots.

Depending on the conditions on the plot, underground development will also continue.

A healthy and fresh crop
The plot in Dronten (Flevoland) has now been irrigated once. The crop looks fresh and healthy. Under the ground, the plant now has 1 to 7 tubers, which can be said to be the definitive number. On the plot in Middenmeer (North Holland), the crop status is comparable to that in Dronten. The crop is also healthy on this plot. The plot has now been irrigated for the second time. Here the second time 8 millimeters was administered.

To continue or not to irrigate?
On Sunday 7 July, the plot in Escharen was irrigated for the third time. The aim is to have the sprinkler system on the plot at least every week. It seems as if tubers are still growing, but it remains to be seen whether these tubers will stick around. If there is enough rain next week, the irrigation round can be skipped once, according to the grower.

On the plot in Fijnaart, the irrigation reel was already put back in the shed on Monday. There seems to be sufficient moisture in the soil here and with the weather forecast given, irrigation does not seem necessary for the time being. Some tubers are also added to this plot, but it is uncertain whether they will actually remain.

On the plot in Fijnaart, the plants count about 9 tubers.

Fluid deficiency in the east of the Netherlands
Last week, almost 5 millimeters fell on the plot in Goor (Overijssel). However, this does not help with the moisture deficit on the plot. On the other hand, the temperatures are favorable and there is currently low crop evaporation. For more potato plots in the East It is hoped for rain in the coming week.
