Crop tour Onions week 29

Increased pressure from thrips on the Tollebeek plot

15 July 2019 - Redactie Boerenbusiness

The onion crops of the Boerenbusiness Crop tour look good. Last week's precipitation had an influence on this. The thrips pressure is high in the Noordoostpolder, but so far it has not been too bad in the other areas.

The most precipitation fell on the plots in the Flevopolder last week. More than 36 millimeters of rain fell on the plot in Zeewolde (Flevoland) and more than 32 millimeters fell on the plot in Dronten (Flevoland). The rain showers on the plot in Zeewolde were accompanied by hail in heavy showers. The plot in Zeewolde already had to deal with hail damageThat wasn't the case this week.

The plot in Kortgene (Zeeland) was lucky with the precipitation, other plots in the area received considerably less rainfall.

The precipitation according to the Sencrop weather posts on the onion plots of the crop tour in week 28.

Disease pressure thrips
The disease pressure of thrips is quite high on the plot in Tollebeek (Flevoland). The forecast was that the rain might lower the pressure, but the opposite is true. On Tuesday morning, June 16, the plot will be sprayed with Tracer to combat the thrips. Only thrips larvae were found on the plot in Kortgene, and control is expected to be carried out next week. Thrips are found here and there on the other plots, but so far this has been quite limited.

Sphere Formation
In addition to the plots in Oeffelt (North Brabant), Zweeloo (Drenthe) and Tollebeek, the plot in Dronten, Kimswerd (Friesland) and Kortgene can also be added to the list of plots where ball formation is underway. On the plot in Kimswerd there is not yet 100% bulb formation, the remaining part of the plants will follow soon. Both the plants on the plot in Kimswerd and the plants on the plot in Dronten continue to produce foliage, now 7 tubes on both plots.
