On a number of Crop Tour plots, the situation has changed considerably in the past week. While the impact of the extremely hot days in weekend 31 didn't seem big yet, that picture is completely different this week.
The onion fields in Kortgene (Zeeland) and Oeffelt (North Brabant) in particular show a different picture this week than 1 week earlier. The plots were sown as one of the first plots, and the plots sown later are still growing.
Wear and dried ends
Despite the fact that there is plenty of rain on the plot in Oeffelt, the onions show yellow and dried tips. The crop is currently in full ironing. At the same time, the plot is also wearing out quickly and less growth than expected is taken into account.
The situation is similar on the onion plot in Kortgene. On this plot it was already clear last week that the crop was damaged by the extreme heat. This week, however, it appears that the crop is also wearing out faster than expected. "The onions are ironing and right now they can use the rain", the grower says. On Saturday 3 July, the plot was sprayed with a sprout inhibitor.
Late plots continue to grow
The onions on the plot in Kimswerd (Friesland), on the other hand, look fresh. These onions were sown 2 weeks later than in Kortgene and Oeffelt. It is to be expected that the plot will therefore also be ironed later. The weather is perfect for the onion plot in Kimswerd, the onions are still growing.
The plot in Zweeloo (Drenthe) seemed to match the plot in Oeffelt, but on the plot in Zweeloo this went less quickly. The growth on this plot is also still in the crop. At the end of July, quite a few onions were already above 60 millimeters; these onions are already approaching 70 millimeters. The plot in Zweeloo was also sown almost 2 weeks later than the plots in Kortgene and Oeffelt.
