Dutch Crop tour Onions week 34

The view of the onion harvest is becoming increasingly clear

19 August 2019 - Redactie Boerenbusiness

Now that almost all onion plots of the Onion Crop Tour have been planted, the view of the actual harvest is becoming increasingly clear. Despite the fact that the plots may settle earlier due to the strong wind, they remain green and growth seems to continue for a while.

Rain fell on all onion plots last week. This has ensured that the irrigation of the plots has now been completed; The reel has already been brought in almost everywhere. The most precipitation fell in the north and south last week. 51,1 millimeters fell on the plot in Kortgene (Zeeland) and about 62,5 millimeters fell on the onion plot in Kimswerd (Friesland).

sprays
The onions on the Crop Tour plots in Kortgene (Zeeland), Zeewolde (Flevoland) and Tollebeek (Flevoland) have already been sprayed with maleic hydrazide (MH). The germination inhibitor will be sprayed this week on the plot in Kimswerd (Friesland). It is not yet certain when the germination inhibitor will be sprayed on the plot in Zweeloo (Drenthe). This plot will be sprayed in 2 times, because approximately 25% of the plot lags behind the rest.

Low yield in Noordoostpolder
The yield on the onion plot in Tollebeek (Flevoland) does not seem to be that bad. The warm period has had a great influence. The plot was irrigated once before and once after emergence. The last spraying against leaf spot and downy mildew is expected to be done next week. The final disease control is also being carried out on the onion plot in Oeffelt (North Brabant).

For the plot in Kortgene (Zeeland), the onions are harvested at least in September. The plot in Tollebeek (Flevoland) will probably be cleared around mid-September. It is not yet clear when the other onion plots will be grubbed up. The seed onions will remain in the ground until at least the end of August.
