Dutch Crop tour Potatoes week 34

First crop tour plot has been cleared

20 August 2019 - 1 reaction

The moment of harvesting varies enormously between all plots of the Crop Tour Boerenbusiness. The first plot has now been cleared, but the other plots do not seem to be ready for this yet.

The Crop tour plot in Scharendijke (Zeeland) is the first to be cleared this year. On Monday, August 19, the first Innovators were brought from the country. After the trial harvest in week 31, the growth had already stopped in this plot. Last week's precipitation fell too late, as it was not possible to irrigate here. The yield data will soon be on the Crop Tour page Boerenbusiness to be mentioned.

The potato plot in Scharendijke (Zeeland) was already partially cleared on Monday, August 19.

Planted late
However, the situation on the plot in Spijk (Groningen) is very different. That plot was planted on April 26 and was therefore planted last. The foliage is still vital, so the potatoes still have some time to grow. Last year this plot achieved a yield of 56 tons. The grower of the plot reports that such a yield should also be possible this season. Although they are few in number, the tubers have a good size.

The plot in Dronten (Flevoland) will probably be one of the last plots to be cleared. It will also take at least 1 month before haulm killing starts, so the Innovators will not be harvested until early October at the earliest. The plot is in the final growth phase. The foliage is still green, but will be slowly drained in the coming weeks.

Growing weather
The plot in Fijnaart (North Brabant) had decent growing weather after the trial harvest in week 31. Between 4 millimeters and 15 millimeters of rain has fallen for 40 weekends in a row. The potatoes have therefore recovered well. The plot is still very vital and is certainly not ready for foliage killing in the coming weeks. A

The foliage on the plot in Voorst (Gelderland) has lost quite a bit of color, although there remains potential for continued growth. Last year, the potato grower in Voorst achieved a yield of 50 tons, despite the dry weather. "We will probably exceed that this year," says the grower of this plot.
