Crop tour Potatoes

Innovators helped in the last test harvest

10 September 2019 - 1 reaction

The second trial harvesting on the potato plots of the Boerenbusiness Crop tour took place in week 36. Figures show that the potatoes (Innovator) have grown considerably in 5 weeks.

The first trial harvests on the potato plots took place in week 31. It was very dry when the trial harvests were held. At the end of weekend 31 (after the trial harvesting) rain came and a period of growth began. The yields of the trial harvesting in week 36 are therefore a lot better.

The second trial harvests show that the potatoes have grown enormously in 5 weeks. In the trial harvesting, 4 plots resulted in a yield above 70 tons (an indication). It is striking that the fields of the Crop Tour are often (at least 4 times) irrigated. The plot in Escharen (North Brabant) was irrigated no less than 10 times.

Plots that are not irrigated
Not all plots showed significant growth after week 31. In particular, the fields that were not irrigated, including Scharendijke (Zeeland) and Goor (Overijssel), were already on the decline in week 31. The precipitation has therefore had little influence here.

The plot in Scharendijke was almost ready after the first trial harvesting, so that the plot was already harvested on Monday 19 August (week 34). With a yield of 43,9 tons, few tons were added after the first trial harvest. Nevertheless, the yield is better than last year's potato plot in Scharendijke. That plot was severely affected by the drought, so that the yield remained at 30,8 tons.

growth potential
While the plots in Scharendijke and Goor were on the decline, there are also plots that still have quite a bit of time to grow in week 36. For example, the plot in Dronten (Flevoland) is a late plot and the potatoes can continue to grow there for a while.

There is still a lot of growth potential in the Dronten plot.

Trial harvesting figures
To determine the test harvesting figures, 3 meters were harvested at 1,33 random places in the plot. These results have been calculated back to the yield per hectare. The yield figures have not been tested against the statistical standards and are therefore only an indication.

Last season, 6 out of 10 growers also participated in the Crop Tour. These plots can therefore be compared with each other. In addition, the plots in Ens (Flevoland) and Dronten can be compared with the plots in Marknesse (Flevoland) and Biddinghuizen (also Flevoland). The potato plots in Goor and Voorst (Gelderland) are not compared with last year, because these plots do not correspond to the regions of last year.

Difference with 2018
Compared to last year, the trial harvest is 7,4 tons higher. The yield figures of the Crop Tour plots were above the national average last year. This year it is also expected that the plots will score higher than the national average.

On Thursday September 12, the closing seminar for the Boerenbusiness Crop tour held (free entrance). During the seminar, the themes of last season will be discussed and the market experts of DCA will provide an initial forecast of the pricing of the 2019 harvest.
