Dutch Crop tour Week 20

Drought has little effect on herbicides

11 May 2020 - Redactie Boerenbusiness

The drought puts the growers of the Boerenbusiness Crop tour for challenges this year. The soil had to be worked more often and watering has been done more often than in previous years. The latest challenge is weed control. Do the various herbicides work or will the grower adjust his chemical plan this year?

Every grower has his own approach when it comes to choosing a product. The potato grower out Scharendijke has sprayed with 1,5 liter Challenge and 0,25 Sentium. "Soil agents work less well than in other years due to the drought. If it rains, I want to have used a product that still works after a few weeks, so that I don't have to spray again," the grower tells. Boerenbusiness.

Prevent evaporation
Also in Dronten about the same reasoning is used. "We opt for products that have not evaporated after a few days, we apply a product that can still work in 2 weeks, if there is a rain shower." With this, the grower wants to avoid being dependent on the amount of precipitation.

Little moisture needed
The grower out Hank has sprayed Centium and Proman on the potato plot. Here too, the grower opts for products that require as little moisture as possible and that maintain a longer effect. With this he wants to ensure that the weeds that gain access to moisture die before they develop.

Follow cultivation advisor
The grower in Fijnaart will soon be applying Challenge, Centium and Proman to the plot. The crop advisor advised him to do this because of the longer effect of the herbicide. "The effect may not be 100%, but better to spray some herbicide that can be used than nothing."

No spraying Sencor
The other growers say they will not adjust the chemistry. The growers in Appelscha, Middenmeer, Cuijk, Ens, Oldeholtwolde en Someren made no adjustments and applied the herbicide like other years.

The drought also makes it more difficult for weeds to germinate and grow, so it is still too early for growers to say what their expectations will be for next year. However, several growers indicate that Sencor will no longer be sprayed once the potatoes have come through. As a result, the Innovator variety grows poorly or no longer, which affects the yield.
