Crop tour Week 22

Legs started earlier than other years

27 May 2020 - Redactie Boerenbusiness

Potato growers of the Boerenbusiness Croptours have been busy irrigating and spraying last week. On most plots, the crops are on top. In terms of planting date, there is little difference this year, but it is ahead of other years.

This year, 10 plots are again taking part in the Crop Tour with Innovator. Last year the first grower started planting on April 6 and the last grower was ready on April 29. This year they started a little earlier (April 4) and the growers were ready much earlier (April 16).

Planting date 2019 Planting date 2020
Noord April 26 April 10
middle April 18-23 April 14-17
South April 6-29 April 4-16

No frost damage
No damage or problems due to frost occurred on the 10 participating plots this year. Because Innovator is not an early variety, most of the potatoes had not yet reached the top.

At the end of May, all the potatoes on the plots are upstairs, the first impression is that the emergence does not differ much from other years. Most potatoes emerge in about 4 weeks. On the plot in Someren is irrigated 30 mm after the potatoes have emerged so that the potatoes are provided with moisture during the tuber setting.

The plot in Ens in week 21 and week 22

On the plot in Middenmeer Non-inversion tillage (NKG) has been applied this year. The grower is very satisfied with this, because this year more moisture is retained in the soil. This left the potato in a damp ridge. Last weekend 4,5 mm of precipitation fell in Middenmeer. "That's very little, but it's nice and fresh for the potatoes, but the precipitation will disappear in no time." Tells the grower Boerenbusiness.

Middle Lake week 22

Leg earlier than other years
The grower out Fijnaart planted around April 14 this year. "Last year I was one of the first within the Crop Tour and not this year. That is probably because of the spring, because plowing was possible and started earlier, I think that planting was also done earlier". The plot from Fijnaart runs from 25% to 55% slip-ability. As a result, the potatoes in the lighter places have already broken through and the potatoes in the heavier places are just now getting through.
