Dutch Crop tour Week 28

North receives the most precipitation

9 July 2020 - Redactie Boerenbusiness

The onion fields in the north of the Netherlands have received the most precipitation in the past 7 days. Are the growers satisfied or do they hope for more precipitation in the coming week?

The differences in precipitation are large last week. Kimswerd, Wezup and Tollebeek received at least 30 millimeters of precipitation. The onion plots in the south of the country received less than 20 millimeters.

Plot Amount of precipitation in mm in the past 7 days
Kimswerd (Friesland) 35.8
wezup (Drenthe) 33.5
Tollebeek (Flevoland) 34.3
Kortgene (Zealand) 17.3
Ysselsteyn (Limburg) 15
heijen (North Brabant) 12.7
Dronten (Flevoland) No data known last 7 days
Average: 24.8

More precipitation is welcome
The plot in Kortgene is allowed to receive more precipitation than the 17,3 millimeters that fell in the past 7 days. "The warm weather will give up after the weekend, so I hope that there will still be enough precipitation for the onions before and into the weekend," the grower tells. Boerenbusiness† The grower hopes that the precipitation will keep the soil sufficiently moist for the onions. Due to the warmer weather next week, more will evaporate. Because it is not possible to irrigate in Kortgene, there must be enough moisture in the soil so that the onions can use it.

It's not disappointing yet
Sufficient water has fallen on the educational plot in Dronten over the past 7 days. Last week 400 kilos of Greenhouse was spread on the plot to stimulate plant growth. "Last week we spread KAS, which should now work well in conjunction with the precipitation. We still have some seed sprouts and a few spherical formations on the plot", a supervisor tells. Boerenbusiness† "It's not that bad, I expected worse due to the dry conditions at the beginning when we sowed the onions."

North is very happy
The 2 northernmost plots of Wezup and Kimswerd are satisfied with the precipitation. "They are growing fast and today I'm adding a little bit of nitrogen," says the grower from Wezup. The grower from Kimswerd is also very satisfied. At first the grower was waiting for windless weather to start irrigating. showers of the past week, however, it will take a while before the reel is used again.
