Last weekend, all potato plots of the Boerenbusiness Crop tour precipitation. In terms of precipitation, the differences are large with an outlier of almost 28 millimeters in Scharendijke.
There has been a lot of precipitation in the past 7 days, as can be seen in the table below:
Plot | Precipitation in mm |
Cuijk (North Brabant) | 5.3 |
Scharendijke (Zealand) | 27.9 |
Fijnaart (North Brabant) | 8.6 |
Dronten (Flevoland) | 10.2 |
Ens (Flevoland) | 31 |
Hank (North Brabant) | 6.6 |
Middenmeer (North Holland) | 21.6 |
Someren (North Brabant) | 3.6 |
Appelscha (Friesland) | 24.6 |
Oldeholtwolde (Friesland) | 12.2 |
The most precipitation fell in Ens, the plot in Someren received the least precipitation with 3.6 millimetres. North Brabant has received the least precipitation and globally, the north has had more rain than the south, with the exception of Scharendijke.
Surface still dry
"I am very happy with this shower that fell. Almost everything fell on Saturday evening and with this precipitation we should be able to go ahead for about 2 weeks," says the grower from Scharendijke. Boerenbusiness† The plot cannot be irrigated and became very dry, despite the precipitation, the substrate is still dry according to the grower. "The storm came at the right time, I had spots on the plot where the foliage was starting to wear out due to the drought."
Moisture sensors indicate moisture is needed
There has been little rainfall on the plot in Hank. "Unfortunately, we are not allowed to participate, I would have liked more precipitation", says the grower from Hank. The moisture sensors indicate that the potatoes need moisture. "The market's perspective only prevents me from watering and incurring extra costs." The grower doubts whether he will still water at the end of the week to provide the potatoes with moisture. Due to the drought, the potatoes are also wearing out here.
Not much evaporation at the moment
About 10 millimeters of precipitation fell on the plot in Dronten. "This is about enough to keep the potatoes going. Fortunately, we don't have to worry too much at the moment, but if tropical temperatures come, we can water again at the end of this week or early next week." The grower thinks the substrate is still very dry and keeps a close eye on the temperature to see how much water has evaporated and the potatoes need to produce enough kilos on the plot.
