Crop tour Week 34

Can rain save the onion crop?

17 August 2020 - Redactie Boerenbusiness

The onion fields have had sufficient rainfall in the past week. All onion plots of the Boerenbusiness Croptours, except for 1, have received at least 20 millimeters of precipitation.

The fields have had rain from the north to the south of the country. The plot in Wezup in Drenthe is particularly well endowed. In the table below you will find an overview of the precipitation of the past 7 days. Precipitation was measured via sencrop fences on the plots.

Plots Precipitation in mm
wezup (Drenthe) 70
Kimswerd (Friesland) 38.6
Ysselsteyn (Limburg) 31.8
Kortgene (Zealand 35
Tollebeek (Flevoland) 23.4
heijen (North Brabant) 3
Average: 28.8

Most precipitation fell in Wezup with 70 millimeters. The grower from Wezup has cleaned up the reel and does not expect to need it anymore this season. ''The plot is almost completely ironed and the plot was able to absorb and process the 70 millimeters well''.

The grower has stated several times this year that his plot is beautifully clean and has had few problems with weeds. Due to the drought of the past few weeks, there have been some pollinations. Due to the dusting of the soil and the drought, the grower suspects that the soil herbicide has not been able to do its job properly. As a result, nodes have now entered the plot. As a result, the grower feels that it has become a bit dirtier than he was used to.

More hoped
The plot in Heijen, North Brabant, has received the least rainfall. "The onions are completely ironed, but I would have liked to have had around 20 millimeters to keep them fresh and cool." The grower expects a lower yield than last year. "It was too wet in February. I grow here on heavy clay and because of the rain in February, the subsoil has become too hard and the roots could not grow well through it." As a result, the onions gave up too early and the yield is expected to be lower than last year.

Green and vital
Last week, around 38 millimeters fell on the plot in Kimswerd. This is due to irrigation and precipitation. "The onions have withstood the heat well, and the first onions have started ironing. The onions are still beautifully green and vital, there are hardly any dead spots to be found," says the grower. The grower from Kimswerd is satisfied with the rainfall and hopes that this will give the onions another boost.

Bisexuality in Zeeland
The grower in Kortgene is happy with the precipitation. There is no possibility to irrigate in Kortgene and the precipitation was therefore welcome. "The onions that I have sprayed with MH and are ironing are deteriorating rapidly. Tonight (August 17) I will spray the last onions with MH. Some places in the plot were not ready for this yet and I want to give them a chance to to develop better.”
