Dutch Crop tour Week 36

Onion plot in Heijen is being harvested

3 September 2020 - Kimberly Bakker

On the plot in Heijen that participates in the Boerenbusiness Crop tour started harvesting the onions on Wednesday 2 September. It is the second onion plot of the Gewastour that is being harvested. In Wezup, grubbing is not planned for the time being.

On Wednesday 2 September, the onion harvesting started in Heijen (Limburg). According to the grower, quite a bit of weeds have grown on the plot over the past month, but all in all he is not dissatisfied with the expected yield. "As I suspected, I think that we have our hands full with 50 tons. Next Wednesday we will load the onions and I expect to get more clarity."

The onion plot in Heijen is not the first plot that has been harvested, because the onions on the plot in Ysselsteyn (Limburg) are earlier already taken off the country. A yield is expected there between 50 and 60 tons. In Tollebeek (Flevoland) it is hoped that harvesting can take place at the end of next week or the following week. At the moment, however, the plot is not completely dead. "The yields seem to be good."

Wezup is waiting to harvest
In Wezup (Drenthe), on the other hand, there are no plans yet for grubbing. "A large part of the onions is still upright on the high part and 10% to 20% of the foliage is still green in the bad spots. So the plot is really too green to think about harvesting." The plot has 2 varieties: Donna's and Vento's. Precipitation is fine, because the plot received 11,7 millimeters last week.

The plot in Kimswerd (Friesland) was again well served with precipitation last week. 22,9 millimeters have fallen here in recent days. In Kortgene (Zeeland) almost as much fell: 22,1 millimeters. It is expected that the onions will be harvested on this plot next week. On average, the plots of the Boerenbusiness Crop tour 15,6 millimeters of precipitation.
