Dutch Crop tour Week 38

Onion harvest is going well on Crop Tour plots

16 September 2020 - Kimberly Bakker

The harvesting of the onions is going well on the plots of the Boerenbusiness Crop tour. Harvesting has already started in Kimswerd, Wezup and Tollebeek. In addition, the yield of the plot in Ysselsteyn is known.

The onion harvesting started last week on the onion plot in Kimswerd (Friesland). And according to the grower, this is going well. "The foliage is still beautifully green and the ground is soft. We are a bit more lucky in the north than in the south of the Netherlands." In some parts of the southwest of the Netherlands it is even too dry to harvest.

By the way, no top yields are expected on the plot, but the onions do look good. "I expect about 60 tons, but I am not dissatisfied with this this season." During the trial harvesting, the plot achieved a yield of 53,1 tons. "In addition, I expect a low tare percentage this season."

The grower in Kimswerd is satisfied with the onions.

No problems
The onion harvest also got off to a good start in Wezup (Drenthe). No problems are experienced and the grower is satisfied with what he sees. He doesn't have to complain in terms of yield either, because the trial harvesting of weekend 35 a yield of 80 tons emerged. "Although the plot looks good in general, there are places that are expected to lower the average slightly," he said earlier.

In Tollebeek (Flevoland), the hope is that the onions can be loaded next week. "They can now (due to the warm weather) remain in place. Some pieces are still a bit green." In general, the onions look good and are a nice size. The yield during the trial harvest is 77 tons and the grower expects to come close to this. In Kortgene (Zeeland), the onions are on the field and it is hoped that they can be loaded by the end of the week.

The onions are now also in the fields in Kortgene.

Ysselsteyn yield announced
Last week it became known that the tare percentage in Ysselsteyn (Limburg) came out at 2,19%. In the meantime, the yield is also known. The plot participating in the Boerenbusiness Croptour has arrived at a net yield of 67 tons, dry from the shed. "I'm happy with this. It's not that bad if you keep this year in mind," says the grower. More information about the yield and the tare percentage will probably be announced in Heijen (Limburg) later this week.
