Crop tour Potatoes week 10

These plots follow the Crop Tour Potatoes

11 March 2021 - Jesse Torringa

Organized for the fourth year in a row Boerenbusiness the Potato Crop Tour. In this article we take you through the 10 plots with ware potatoes. What is the growing season like on the plots, what choices do the growers make and what is the yield? With the Crop Tour you will be kept informed of current developments.

The growing season has started and the first preparations have already been made on some plots. The Innovator variety is grown on all plots so that good comparisons can be made. In addition, the influence of soil type on potato cultivation is examined.

Plot Oldeholtwolde
The first plot is located near Oldeholtwolde, Friesland. Arable farming and contracting company Evenhuis grows its Innovators here on a 9,5 hectare plot of peat soil. The plot is unprocessed and has now received 35m³ of pig slurry as fertiliser. The company cultivates between 650 and 700 hectares of agricultural land every year and is growing 415 hectares of ware potatoes this year. In addition, maize, sugar beet, grains and onions are grown.

Plot Appelscha
A little more to the north in Friesland is the place Appelscha. Here we follow the plot of arable farm Mesken. The company grows about 250 hectares of ware potatoes and 30 hectares of beets. "I rent a lot of agricultural land in the Appelscha area. That's how I get this acreage," says grower René Mesken about his construction plan. The exact plot that will be followed this year is still unknown.

Two plots in Dronten
In Flevoland we follow 2 plots in the vicinity of Dronten. The first plot has a size of 5,5 hectares and has light loam as the soil type. Last year onions were grown here. In addition to potatoes and onions, Herman Schlepers agricultural company also grows chicory, winter carrots, sugar beets and grains. In total Herman Schlepers works about 100 hectares.

The other plot in Dronten belongs to Van Liere Agriculture. They are participating for the first time this year. The plot that we are following has an average siltability of 35% and is 10,6 hectares in size. Last year there was wheat, after which fodder radish was sown. In total, Van Liere works about 500 hectares. In addition to consumption, the company also grows seed potatoes for HZPC, winter carrots, seed onions and grains.

Plot Hellevoetsluis
Near Hellevoetsluis in South Holland there is a 16 hectare plot that we are following this season. Kees Trouw grows chips potatoes here. He is also a new participant in the Crop Tour this year. The plot was plowed in November and has sea clay as the soil type. Trouw cultivates approximately 150 hectares of land, with chips potatoes, sugar beets, yellow onions and grain in the crop plan.

Land Scharendijke
In Scharendijke in Zeeland, we follow a plot of VOF Schouwen Agro. The plot is 10 hectares and has a light clay soil type. During the past growing season, half of the plot had grass and the other half had winter wheat. Schouwen Agro is a collaboration between 4 companies. "Together we grow over 300 hectares," says Tonco Padmos. The company grows potatoes, yellow onions, sugar beet, grain, flax and peas for seed cultivation.

Plot of fine art
The company Vrolijk Landbouw is located in Fijnaart, North Brabant. The plot being followed is 22,5 hectares in size and has a siltability of 30% to 40%. Last winter it was plowed with winter wheat as pre-fruit. The company has over 300 hectares of cultivated land. In addition to potatoes, Vrolijk grows beets, celeriac and grains.

Plot Hank
In Hank, Brabant, we follow a 10-hectare plot of agricultural company J. Branderhorst. The soil type is marine clay and grass clover was on it last growing season. Non-inversion tillage (NKG) is being carried out on the plot. The company covers approximately 200 hectares and also provides contract work for other companies. In addition to potatoes, sugar beet, sowing onions, grass seed, green beans and grain are grown.

Plot Mill & Sint Hubert
In Mill en Sint Hubert, North Brabant, there is a plot of 5,5 hectares. Daan Janssen of Tojapigs grows the Innovators here that we follow with the Crop Tour. The name already gives it away: in addition to arable farming, the company also has a branch with pig farming. The arable branch mainly grows potatoes for which land is leased in the wider area.

Plot Someren
There is a plot of 6 hectares in Someren, North Brabant. The soil type is loam and sand and currently there is still a green manure on it. In addition to potatoes, De Beer Leende grows maize, beets and grass. In addition to his own arable farm, he provides contract work to other growers.
