These weather conditions make it a pleasure for the growers. There is action on the plots from the north to the south of the Netherlands, including the participants of the Onion Crop Tour. The first plots have been sown and others are being fertilized.
In Ysselsteyn (NB) the first crop tour parcel of onions had already been sown on 23 March under good conditions. The plot in Kortgene was also sown last Monday (week 13). Klaas Jan Boer sounds satisfied: "Last weekend we had 4 mm of precipitation and now we have been able to sow nice and moist, at a depth of about 2,5 centimeters". The variety is Hybelle and the seedbed is 1,50 m. Liquid phosphate and Vydate were applied during sowing. In addition, Klaas Jan immediately gave a small starting gift with Nutramon of 150 kg per hectare.
Plot Wezup also sown
Arjen Jakobs has also not been idle with the beautiful weather and is loose on the sandy soil. The Hoza variety is sown in 1,5 meter beds. "At the beginning of this week there was digging and today we are sowing. Last year I started sowing just after digging and that was a bit too soon. Now I waited 2 days and then the soil falls a bit better. hoping for a rain shower so that a small crust forms on it."
Sowing is planned despite weather change
Despite the fact that the mercury will be a lot lower in the coming days, sowing onions is on the agenda. For example, the plot in Oeffelt (NB) is ready to be sown. The field has been plowed and cultivated this week. The plot in Dronten van Aeres Hogeschool will also be sown next Friday (April 2).
In the north of the Netherlands, it is traditionally a bit later to sow onions, but the conditions are good. The plots in Eenrum in Groningen and Kimswerd in Friesland will also be sown this week or next week. "It was on the wet side at the beginning of this week, but we hope to be able to sow in nicely moist soil by the end of this week. At the beginning of this week we applied fertilizer Agrocote max, coated urea. We do this for a quiet growth and try it like that we want to keep the onions green for as long as possible for maximum skin quality".
