Dutch Crop tour weekend 17

Big splash of rain on one plot, reel on another

30 April 2021 - Jesse Torringa

After 2 weeks without precipitation, that changed on Thursday (29 April) and how. In some places, as much as more than 30 millimeters fell, in other areas it remained virtually dry. Growers have to postpone the potato planting, but the reel is being rolled out in the south.

With peaks of 50 millimeters in Flevoland, just as much precipitation fell in one day as the average in April. The potato planting has stopped there for the time being. A considerable amount of precipitation also fell in other parts of the country, especially around the IJsselmeer. In the southeast of the Netherlands it remained virtually dry. Below is an overview of the precipitation from last Thursday.

Growers benefited from a rain shower
The precipitation sum varies considerably in the Netherlands. Participants of the Boerenbusiness Crop tour confirm that. Some crops could use some water. Kees Trouw from Hellevoetsluis is happy with the precipitation. "We have had 16 millimeters today. That is ideal for my onions and sugar beets. Unfortunately, the potato plants have come to a standstill, because I still have 15 hectares to go." Jacco van Liere from Dronten (FL) also rained out. Almost 40 millimeters fell on his plot over the entire day. "It's not bad for the potatoes that have been planted, but I still have 55 hectares to go."

The Crop Tour plot in Biddinghuizen received no less than 30 millimeters. A little further north in Nagele, 15 millimeters fell. The rain gauge also overflowed in Scharendijke (Zeeland). 27 millimeters fell on the Crop Tour plot. The amount of precipitation is clearly displayed via the sencrop app.

Southeast remained dry
It remained dry in the southeast of the Netherlands. Geert Jilissen from Oeffelt (NB) would have liked to have had a shower: "We had less than 1 millimeter here. We had hoped for a bit more, but unfortunately. It is now time to roll out the reel on the last sown onion plot, because part of the seed is now dry." There was also not a drop of rain on the Crop Tour plots in Someren and Ysselsteyn.
