Dutch Crop tour Onions - Week 24

Significant damage to seed onions due to thunderstorms

June 19, 2021 - Jesse Torringa

It was almost American scenes with the storm last Friday. The severe thunderstorms caused a lot of regional damage. Rain showers again caused ditches to overflow and the strong gusts of wind also damaged the plots.

It was especially hard in the middle of the Netherlands. For almost every grower, the rain showers came after a very warm period, but regionally the weather conditions were a bit too much. In Oosterwolde (Gelderland), for example, electricity pylons were blown over, roads were blocked by fallen trees and there is damage on several plots. damage has been reported in particular in the Noordoostpolder (NOP) and the north of the Netherlands.

Seed onions badly beaten
Things got tough in the Noordoostpolder. Wind gusts and hail have severely damaged fields. This is clearly visible on the Gewastour plot in Nagele (Noordoostpolder). The sowing onions have been badly hit by the wind. Some plants are even clipped, others are snapped. The question is how they recover.

The seed onions on the Gewastour plot in Nagele have been badly damaged by the storm.

The Crop Tour plot in Wezup also received the full coating, as witnessed by the video that grower Arjan Jakobs made. The rainwater stood here between the rows.

Despite the thunderstorm, precipitation was not too bad in most areas. Regionally, the precipitation caused problems, but other areas received nothing. At the crop tour plot in Oeffelt (North Brabant), there was no problem, according to Geert Jillissen: "I just moved the reel again. We didn't have any millimeters again and had a beautiful day today. I hope for a shower on Sunday , because otherwise it will be the turn of the sowing onions on Monday with the reel."

Severe thunderstorms expected again
In the night from Saturday to Sunday, severe thunderstorms are expected again with downpours and strong gusts of wind. There is also a chance of rain showers in the following days and the temperature will drop. This seems to be the end of the warm and dry period.
