After a dry and warmer period, we are again dealing with stormy summer weather. Where the crops were screaming for moisture last week, they are now regionally up to their ankles in water. Locally, there was an enormous amount of precipitation and growers can only do little in the field.
In the north of the Netherlands in particular, things went haywire. For example, in the province of Friesland, more than 25 millimeters have already fallen in some areas since 100 July. These often involve heavy showers that also bring thunderstorms. It is also very wet in the middle of the Netherlands and the province of Zeeland.
heavy showers
Precipitation was desirable in many areas where the reels were already up and running, but July also started quite wet. As a result, the monthly sum appears to be above the long-term average. In the south of Limburg, a total of even 200 millimeters fell this month. The precipitation came down in heavy showers, onion growers Reinder Hogenhout and Arjen Jakobs also noticed. "It is now starting to get damp. Tuesday night we had a thunderstorm of 45 millimeters", reports Hogenhout from Kimswerd (Friesland). At Jakobs in Wezup (Drenthe), 50 millimeters fell on the Gewastour plot within 24 hours and the streets were flooded. Fortunately, the onion field was able to get rid of the water well.
Explosion of Phytophthora
The explosion of phytophthora that potato growers had to deal with earlier this month seems to be returning due to the current weather conditions. Not all potato growers then kept the potatoes free of phytophthora despite a strict and correct spraying schedule. In addition, phytophthora was even detected in robust varieties. The warmer, sunny weather of last week (week 29) gave potato growers some relief, but that seems to be short-lived.
August starts cool
The month of August, like July, starts with a cool and wet weather type and seems to remain that way for the time being. The temperature will remain around 20 degrees with a chance of showers. Growing weather, but also ideal weather for leaf diseases, which makes it difficult for growers.
