Dutch Crop tour potatoes - week 30

MH spraying is delayed

30 July 2021 - Jesse Torringa

The MH spraying will come a lot later this year than in previous years. For some participants of the Boerenbusiness The time has come for the crop tour, but due to the weather conditions, we cannot start. In other areas the potatoes are not ready yet.

The crop has experienced significant growth. Still, some potato growers prefer to wait a little longer with the MH spraying, whether or not prompted by the weather conditions. Here and there the potatoes already seem to be on the decline, that certainly applies to the innovator variety that we follow in the Crop Tour.

Waiting for the right conditions
A number of potato growers from the Gewastour hope to carry out the MH spraying this week (week 30). If the weather permits. According to Jacco van Liere, potato grower in Dronten, this is about the best time for his plot. "Given the crop and what grows under it, it is time for MH on the potato plot." The right circumstances and the moment are very decisive according to him. "The best thing is about 4 weeks before the crop has completely died off. In a fully-growing crop, the absorption is just a lot better. You then enjoy it throughout the storage season."

Last year, several potato plots had already been treated around this time. The potatoes planted later, such as at Jacob Branderhorst in Hank (North Brabant) are not ready yet. "The potatoes are still too small here," he reports.

In Scharendijke (Zeeland), it rained more than 50 millimeters last week, making the spraying work more difficult. "If there is a dry day this week, the MH will go on."
