Dutch Crop tour onions - week 32

Onions in Gewastour are growing fast, the first one already harvested

10 August 2021 - Jesse Torringa

The first sowing onions of the season have been harvested on the plot in Ysselsteyn van de Boerenbusiness Crop tour. In addition, the seed onions on the other plots are growing rapidly and there is plenty of spraying against foliar diseases.

In Ysselsteyn (Limburg) part of the crop tour plot was harvested on 3 August and delivered immediately. According to the onion grower, the other seed onions on the plot can continue to grow for a while and are still there.

Tons
Onion grower Martijn Derikx is one of the first to deliver seed onions with the very early variety Barito and has therefore harvested part of it. Derikx is not entirely sure about how many tons of seed onions will come from the crop tour plot: 'These are beautiful onions, the number that is available is quite high, but they are quite fine. I think there's about 50 tons, but I'm not sure.' Once the entire plot is on the land, the yield and tare of the plot is known.

Weather becomes decisive
The seed onions are currently not lacking in moisture. 'The onions continue to grow and touch each other in a row', reports onion grower Arjan Jakobs from Wezup. The MH spraying is also behind us for many onion growers who store the onions. The perception of various growers is that the ironing of the seed onions is a bit slower and the foliage also turns quite green. That could change quickly next week as high temperatures are forecast with little precipitation. The onion crop then declines a lot faster.

The sowing onions in Wezup (Drenthe) look fresh and are growing fast.

leaf diseases
Last weekend the risk of infection for, among other things, downy mildew was again fully present. 'You also come across Stemphylium very often, which makes the chance of infection by downy mildew a lot easier in the seed onions', explains Andre Boot, Crop Specialist on onions at Hazera. On the crop tour plots, plenty of action was taken last week to protect the crop. In Eenrum (Groningen) the fungicide Luna Experience was sprayed. In Kimswerd (Friesland), Kortgene (Zeeland) and Wezup (Drenthe) the fungicide Fandango was sprayed.
