Dutch Crop tour Onions - week 32

First trial harvesting onions: varying yields

12 August 2021 - Jesse Torringa

The yields on seed onion plots in the Netherlands vary widely. At least, that's what the first trial harvesting of the onion plots participating in the Boerenbusiness Crop tour clear. What are the results and what is the growth potential of the seed onions in the coming weeks?

This week (week 32) the test harvesting of the seed onions was done on the onion plots, which are spread across the Netherlands. At least 2 times one square meter has been harvested on each plot to get a good idea of the current yield.

Plot yield week 32*        growth potential         Soil type
Wezup (Drenthe) 34,1 3 Zand
Dronten (Flevoland) 42,2 3 Clay
Nagele (Flevoland) 47,6 2,5 heavy sludge
Kortgene (Zeeland) 49,4 3 light clay
Ysselsteyn (Limburg) 53,6 1,5 Zand
Oeffelt (North Brabant) 57,3 2 Zand
Eenrum (Groningen) 62,7 2,5 light loam
Kimswerd (Friesland) 49,2 3 Clay
Average: 49,4 - -

*Yield in tons of kilograms per hectare. 15% of the proceeds have been deducted because of spray marks etc.

According to the trial harvestings of week 32, the plot in Eenrum has the highest yield with 62,7 tons per hectare, followed by the plot in Oeffelt with 57,3 tons per hectare. The plot in Wezup currently has the lowest yield with 34,1 tons.

Growth potential
The current barrels do not say everything about the final yield. The growth potential of most plots is still very high, such as the plot in Kimswerd and Wezup. These plots are very green and have not yet been ironed. The expectation is that a lot of extra kilos will grow here in the coming weeks. The plots in Ysselsteyn and Oeffelt have been ironed for a long time and therefore have a lower growth potential. Relatively speaking, fewer tons will grow here.
