Dutch Crop tour Weather - week 34

Heavy rain for northern provinces

23 August 2021 - Jesse Torringa

Severe thunderstorms passed over the Netherlands last Sunday (24 August). The province of Friesland was particularly affected. More than a month's worth of rain fell within 24 hours. Precipitation was desirable in other provinces.

Last Saturday, the KNMI issued a code yellow for the northern provinces and Flevoland because of the heavy showers. Most regions did well, but records have been broken in parts of Friesland. In Stavoren, for example, 91 millimeters fell within one day. A record of 123 millimeters of precipitation was measured in Laaksum (Friesland). Regions in Groningen and North Holland also had to deal with downpours.

Also the plots of chips potatoes and seed onions that participate in the Boerenbusiness Crop tours did not keep it dry. The Crop Tour plot in Oldeholtwolde (Friesland) received 57.7 millimetres. Earlier this month, several regions already received a considerable amount of precipitation. The plot in Oldeholtwolde (Friesland) is already at 123 millimeters with the heavy showers from Sunday this month.

The crop tour plot in Kimswerd also received a considerable amount of precipitation, just like earlier this month. With about 35 millimeters on Sunday, it will be wet in the region again. It has not caused any actual damage on the fields, but it does complicate the work and finding the best spraying moments.

Growing weather
Most growers are satisfied with the precipitation sum. The land is once again moist, which means that the wear of the crops is slow. The finish line does not yet appear in sight for the majority of the potato crop plots.

Especially with the current temperatures, the weather is very fertile, although the number of hours of sunshine could be a bit more, according to the growers. The sowing onions of the Crop Tour have all started ironing and are heading towards the end. This is how the first sowing onions on the plot in Ysselsteyn are already cleared.
