Dutch Crop tour onions - week 38

Harvest sowing onions is approaching the end without any problems

22 September 2021 - Jesse Torringa

The harvest of the seed onions is going well this year. Most of the onions have now been picked up and are behind the shelves or have left the land. The onion harvest is slowly but surely approaching its end.

The fact that the onion harvest is going so well is due to the right weather conditions that we have had in recent weeks. What also counts is that the harvest started a little earlier on average, due to the timely death of the onion crop this season. In the south almost everything has been picked up, in Flevoland and the north there is still some work to be done, but the end is in sight there too.

For a while, onion growers on the heavier soils seemed to be hampered by the drought, but a few showers of several millimeters ensured that the harvesting conditions remained good. In particular, the plots that had difficulty ironing or were sown at a later date still have to be cleared.

Coarse onions in Eenrum
The onions in Eenrum (Groningen) dried on the land for more than 2 weeks and were picked up last Monday and Tuesday under good conditions. During storage it becomes clear that this is a very coarse batch. The sizing is also very even. The yield according to the trial harvests will be announced next week.

Kimswerd
The yellow seed onions were brought in on the plot in Kimswerd (Friesland) last weekend. Onion grower Reinder Hogenhout helped the onions with ironing and harvested them very green. Even during storage, some green foliage was still visible. With this, Hogenhout hopes to have a better storage quality this season.

wezup
The plot in Wezup (Drenthe) is the last plot of the Gewastour where the harvester still has work to do. The plan is to harvest the onions one of these days and pick them up in a few days. The growth has not been disappointing according to grower Arjen Jakobs. "The onions have looked ordinary all year round, but the re-growth has more than made up for it".
