Dutch Crop tour potato - week 38

First potato plot harvested, but rain needed

24 September 2021 - Jesse Torringa

Harvesting the first potato plot of the Crop Tour 2021 of Boerenbusiness is a fact. Potato harvesting is planned for the other growers, but they (unfortunately) have to wait until the right conditions.

The kick-off of the potato harvest started this Crop Tour in Someren (North Brabant). Grower Mark de Beer had started haulm killing on time this season because of the tight harvesting schedule. According to the trial grubbing-up from week 37, the net yield of the plot was 64,3 tons. De Beer confirms this yield: "The number seemed good early in the season and I am also amazed at the size. We have not often had such large Innovators."

The Innovators go into storage at De Beer in Someren (North Brabant).

Precipitation much needed
A number of Crop Tour growers would like to lower the harvesting head on their plots, but this is being thwarted by the prevailing drought. Precipitation is very desirable on heavy soils before they can continue. Potato grower Kees Trouw from Hellevoetsluis (South Holland) has an alternative up his sleeve: "We have to wait for a shower, because it is very dry here. If that doesn't happen, we will have to provide the potatoes ourselves with water to be able to harvest. ."

In other areas you have to wait for precipitation, such as at Tonco Padmos in Scharendijke (Zeeland). "It has been very dry here for a long time, we have to wait for a shower. Irrigation is not an option for us with the salt water".
