Dutch Crop tour Potato - week 40

Potato yield adjusted upwards

8 October 2021 - Jesse Torringa - 6 comments

Between the rain showers, a number of potato plots have been taken off this week Boerenbusiness Crop tour cleared and drove in. During harvesting and storage, it is noticeable that the kilos are slightly higher than the last test harvests. The other potato growers are postponing harvesting for the time being.

Following the 2 plots in Dronten (Flevoland), the plots in Scharendijke (Zeeland) and Mill en Sint Hubert have also been entered. The conditions between the showers were good and the yield at potato grower Daan Janssen is much higher than during the trial harvests.

10% more yield
At Janssen, the Innovator of the plot is located in a brand new storage warehouse, including mechanical cooling. The pounds certainly didn't disappoint. The net yield from the first trial harvests was 59,8 tons per hectare. At the warehouse, the net weight was 65,7 tons per hectare, approximately 10% higher in yield. Janssen is satisfied with this yield, but not every plot produces these kilos.

The field in Dronten also seems to have a higher yield than was first sampled: "The harvesting conditions are good and luckily the yield is higher than the sampling. It's not great yet, but we are definitely above 50 tons", says potato grower Herman Schlepers.

Scharendijke
In Scharendijke (Zeeland) they would have preferred to have started earlier, but due to the drought the harvesting was postponed. After the first showers, two potato harvesters were harvesting simultaneously on the field. According to potato grower Tonco Padmos, the harvesting conditions were good, but some rain could still fall. That has happened with the precipitation of the past few days. 55 millimeters fell in recent days, according to the Sencrop weather station.
