Dutch Crop tour onions - week 42

Last onions stored without problems

18 October 2021 - Jesse Torringa

The onion harvest of 2021 is approaching the end without too many problems. The last hectares are being loaded and it is realistic that all onions will be in the field by October. Also the last plot from the Boerenbusiness Crop tour has now arrived.

The onion harvest of 2021 went without too many problems this year. Early in the season, harvesting was possible at a rapid pace and the rising market price was also well received. Often the onions also had plenty of time to dry in the field, something that has sometimes been different in recent years. Drought appeared in some areas for a while, but just like now, the necessary millimeters fell every now and then.

Lean yield, but coarse
Just like the onion harvest, the Crop Tour is also approaching the end. In Wezup (Drenthe) the last plot was harvested and stored in the shed. With regard to the yield, onion grower Arjen Jakobs is not completely satisfied, but it could have been less: "Early in the season, the plot was a bit disappointing with growth. The final yield is between 50 and 55 tons," says Jakobs. The yield is partly due to the position of the onions: "The position on the plot was already thin early in the season. As a result, you simply miss too many plants for a high yield. Fortunately, the batch was able to grow very coarse."
