Dutch Crop tour potato - week 42

Innovators almost in, but don't hit the ceiling

22 October 2021 - Jesse Torringa - 2 comments

Until the recent showers, the potato harvesting went well. The potato growers participating in the Boerenbusiness Crop tours are well underway and the last Innovator plot is in sight. The sheds are also getting fuller, but the ceiling is not expected to be hit.

Over the past week, the harvested acreage has been screwed up considerably. More and more potato growers are approaching the end of the harvest and some are already ready. Things are a bit more difficult in the southwest, although the harvesters have not stood still there either.

Few problems
Various growers report that the harvesting conditions were excellent on average. It was not always possible to drive fast, but that the potatoes came out very clean is also worth a lot. However, in some places it was a challenge. Sometimes the harvest was a bit difficult, but anyone who persevered in the past week is probably not dissatisfied with the precipitation that has fallen.

Latest Innovators featured
De Boerenbusiness Crop tour is a good reflection of how the potato crop is going this season. In several places the harvest is ready and in other places it is difficult. For example, last week the crop tour plot in Hank (North Brabant) was driven in between the rain showers. There was earlier already made a start, but the harvester had to be stopped due to the rain. The plot in Appelscha (Friesland), which was planted on June 22, is the last of the Crop Tour that still has to be harvested.

It is on the wet side, but potato grower Kees Vrolijk gets his potatoes clean in Fijnaart (North Brabant).

Spread of yield per variety large
For Kees Vrolijk, potato grower in Fijnaart (North Brabant), the end of the harvest is also in sight. Despite the many millimeters he received earlier this month, potato harvesting was quite possible. He does, however, maintain his position that he is missing at least 5 to 10% in yield, depending on the varieties. Several growers of the Gewastour indicated that the spread in yield between the varieties is large. In terms of yields, the Innovator variety scores (even) less than in previous years.
