Dutch Crop tour Weather - week 42

Very wet month of October halts harvest again

22 October 2021 - Jesse Torringa

The downpours of the past few days have put a stop to the agricultural work for the coming days for the arable farmers. Again more than 50 millimeters fell in some places and so October seems to be a soggy month.

After a relatively dry September, October is more like last summer. With the storm of last Thursday (October 21), the number of millimeters rose considerably. In particular, the coastline and the west received the millimeters.

Land work on the way
The potato harvest has made considerable progress in the past week. Several potato growers already have the end in sight, but the plowing, sowing and harvesting work is also going well for most of them. That has been different in recent years.

In certain areas, such as in North Brabant, there were regular showers, which prevented the harvest from going smoothly: "We had a few showers here, which made it too wet again. We can't do anything because of this," says Jacob Branderhorst, potato grower from Hank (North Brabant).

Several dry days are still needed to secure the full harvest, several growers from De Gewastour report. They hope to be able to go wild again after the weekend, but they also see that the soil is becoming quite saturated after these rain showers. More than 130 millimeters have already fallen in the west this month and along the coast the rain gauge is almost everywhere at 100 millimeters. Inland the monthly sum is somewhat lower. In the southeast of the Netherlands, precipitation is not too bad.
