Dutch Crop tour weather - week 21

Satisfied with millimeters, but not enough yet

25 May 2022 - Robin de Winter

The heavy rain showers with sometimes thunderstorms have tempered the stress of drought for the time being. The precipitation often came down in a heavy splash of water, but fortunately it did not stop at a single shower. Where did the most fall and which plot could use some rainwater?

For every potato and onion grower of the Boerenbusiness Dutch Crop tour recent rainfall was highly desirable. On Tuesday 24 May, up to 15 millimeters fell again in some places. Good to take stock, because the previous rainy period dates back to the beginning of April.

Precipitation last 8 days

Location plot Grower mm
Eenrum (Groningen) onion grower 48.4
Kimswerd (Friesland) onion grower 33.4
Oeffelt (North Brabant) onion grower 32.4
Wezup (Drenthe) onion grower 48.4
Dronten (Flevoland) potato grower 51.6
Hellevoetsluis South Holland) potato grower 25.2
Fijnaart (North Brabant) potato grower 36
Eethen (North Brabant) potato grower 54.6
Kortgene(Zeeland) onion grower 27.2
Three roads (Zeeland) potato grower 31.8

According to the weather stations of AgroExact on the plots, the millimeters lag a bit behind in some areas. At Eethen in Noord-Brabant, the most fell in the past seven days with 54,6 millimeters. Precipitation was somewhat disappointing in the south of the country. It is true that the largest amount fell in Eethen, but the precipitation was only minor among growers in the south-east and south-west of the country. They would have liked to see more there.

Reinder Hogenhout from Kimswerd in Friesland is very satisfied with the precipitation: "I am happy with it this way. I was able to supplement the soil herbicide for a while." He plans to spray liquid fertilizer over the seed onions at the end of the week.

Sufficient precipitation?
The growers are very satisfied with the precipitation, but they are certain: if it doesn't rain for a while, it can become very dry again. They do note that the precipitation that fell over several days was able to sink well into the soil and also to the middle of the potato ridge.
