Crop tour Potato - week 23

Potato growers in the fight against phytophthora

June 11, 2022 - Robin de Winter

While the showers wrung their last drops the week after Pentecost, the potato growers of the Boerenbusiness Crop tour spraying again. While some growers were able to carry out crop protection between rain showers, others needed a little more patience.

The rain shower of last weekend has lingered for a long time and gave precipitation in many places in the Netherlands until Thursday. Now it seems to remain dry, so that all potato growers can continue spraying, provided the soil allows it, of course. The potato growers of the crop tour are very pleased with the precipitation and could hardly have imagined it better in terms of growing conditions.

Fight against phytophthora
Jacco van Liere from Dronten (FL) says that he has had 5 millimeters of precipitation since Sunday 75 June. Because it fell so evenly, he could have sprayed in between against phytophthora on the crop tour plot. This plot is already closed, but it was affected by the cold and wet spring in view of the foliage. Van Liere is positive about the plot and sees that there is still growth. He had already spread his fertilizer, but is considering doing an extra fertilizer, given that more could have been washed out.

Potato grower Mark de Beer from Leende in Brabant says that he has had 55 millimeters of precipitation in the past 7 days. Due to the lighter soil on which they grow, he was able to return to his plot shortly afterwards and continue the phytophthora spraying. The third phytophthora spraying was carried out at De Beer yesterday (Friday 10 June). The rain was more than welcome at De Beer. Had this precipitation not fallen, they would have had to irrigate the crop tour plot for the first time this week.

Finally precipitation in Zeeland
Potato grower Daan Goense from Driewegen in Zeeland tells enthusiastically that the more than 60 millimeters - divided from last Sunday to Wednesday - was perfect. Just before the weekend, he tells from the sprayer that Tuesday was just too crazy to spray because of the wet conditions. Now things got better. He was working on his second phytophthora spray. His potatoes are already closed and have started tuberization. His plan is to do his final fertilization on the crop tour plot next week.

Kees Vrolijk from Fijnaart (NB) just managed to follow the tight spraying schedule. He planted his potatoes a little later than the rest and is now on the fourth or fifth stalk. The last potatoes are now also emerging and immediately have a good connection, so that they can keep up with growth. He is also already working on the phytohthora sprays, because the potatoes in the surrounding fields are already a lot further in development.
